Form Based Codes

This is something interesting that Alice covered in UP101 lecture the other day regarding reforms to the way zoning codes are written and communicated, placing greater emphasis on visuals and design in a prescriptive way, rather than a proscriptive one, like Euclidean zoning.

If anyone is interested in looking at a shift from strict Zoning Code to a hybrid, form based code, the city of Denver is a good example. It may be a little outdated and there are likely many examples, but it is one that I bit familiar with and it is super interesting.

Another recent example is in Miami, where the City is still in the works of adopting Miami21 (a form-based code). Interestingly enough, the consulting firm on Miami21 (http://www.miami21.org) is Duany Plater-Zyberk, who developed SmartCode.

Miami residents were adamantly against the shift to a form-based code when I lived there, so it will be interesting to see how things turn out.
