Detroit Photography

I'm on the fence about even posting this gallery of photographs from Detroit.

This type of photography has been dubbed "ruin porn" and I think there is truth to that. These are taken out of context and presented in this way are absent of any sort of positive counterpart.

But after several conversations with photographers about the topic, I think these can be useful. Especially if it is acknowledged that the physical element is just a fraction of what makes a city a city.

I still think these photos are powerful:

This sums it up, sometimes:
(from the photographer)
"I got out of the car to take this picture," Marlowe recalls, "and there was no one around. But residents just seemed to suddenly materialize. The dialog was brief. 'What are you doing?' 'I’m leaving.'"
